The pork industry is constantly in search of new production methods to meet the growing demand for sustainability. The big goal is the development of a low-carbon swine culture.
Today’s pork production systems yield high volumes of manure. Situations such as leaks in hydraulic systems, waste of water in drinking fountains and inadequate cleaning systems are always reviewed and adjusted from a technical and productive point of view. The problem is exacerbated due to undersized storage systems, poor distribution infrastructure and small agricultural areas for waste application.
Issues such as storage, distribution and environmental pollution are constant concerns of the pork industry. The design of buildings, feeds, types of drinking fountains and cleaning and handling systems basically determine the characteristics and total volume of waste produced.
Sustainability in swine production will be the focus of analysis during United Pork Americas (September 7-9, 2022) in the United States. Victor Ochoa Calderón, General Manager of Granjas Carroll de México, one of the 3 largest pork producers in Mexico, will address the theme "Sustainable pork production in the age of climate change.”
According to Flavia Roppa, president of United Pork Americas, studies have already proven that all technologies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions developed for pork production can be applied in any swine production unit.
“It is natural that smaller-scale production units have greater difficulty in making the implementation and maintenance of these systems economically viable,” said Roppa. “During United Pork Americas it is important to highlight the most modern practices for managing swine manure, how to manage manure on the farm, what are the main characteristics of swine manure and what care should we take with manure from the farm. We need to be aware of the impact of climate change on meat production and sustainability is already part of the reality of agribusiness.”
The concept of “cleaner production” initially advocates practices that reduce the production of effluents, through the management of two basic inputs of the swine industry: water and feed. “We must consider in this sustainability equation the adequate treatment of effluents, the agricultural use of biofertilizers from this treatment and the different uses of biogas from anaerobic fermentation,” said Roppa.
