The IPVS - International Pig Veterinary Society Congress, the largest scientific and technical event in swine farming worldwide, arrives in Brazil with the mission of writing a new chapter in the national history of the sector: IPVS 2022. Headquartered in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), the event returns to the country after 32 years, and will be held between June 21 and 24, 2022, at RioCentro Convention & Event.
Fernanda Almeida, veterinarian, PhD and president of the IPVS Congress, highlights that we live in a unique moment in the world with the Covid-19 pandemic, which has challenged the most diverse aspects of production. “With resilience and believing in the importance of Science, we resumed the organization of IPVS2022, confident in its importance for the development of Brazilian and worldwide swine farming.”

A new organizational model for a new generation of IPVS
Science is dynamic and cannot stop, so the IPVS has a duty to make it accessible to everyone. "We need to show the world how Brazil can do science like no other country can," says Fernanda.
To promote and approve a coherent grid that meets the most diverse interests of the sector, the event will feature a pre-congress held on June 21, which will cover different areas, such as agribusiness, well-being, mucosal immunology, nutrition, African swine fever and reproduction. “The agribusiness pre-congress is an innovation at IPVS events and opens space for industries in a broad and assertive way,” emphasizes Fernanda.
For the first time, an edition of the IPVS will promote a debate on agribusiness. The sector, a pillar of the Brazilian economy, grew 2% in December and closed the year 2020 with a record expansion of 24%, in comparison with 2019, according to a Technical Communication from the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) and the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea). In monetary terms, the country's GDP totaled R$ 7.45 trillion in 2020, and the agribusiness GDP reached almost R$ 2 trillion.
“We know what agribusiness represents for Brazil, generating jobs and income, and how many lives are improved through the sector, especially when talking about pig farming. For this reason, we will address the issue so that the world understands the connection and the strength of the Brazilian agribusiness for our development,” stresses the Director of Institutional Relations of IPVS 2022, José Antônio Ribas.
The event will also bring updated consumer trends to a post-Covid-19 world, and how relevant safe food is, expanding the range of products that can be offered to the world after the pandemic. Other topics raised will be the participation of women in the leadership of agribusiness, sustainability in the production system, the environment, social and managerial results.
The Brazil edition has an organizing committee composed of Fernanda Almeida as President, Roberto Guedes in the Scientific Directorate, Isabel Muniz in the Financial Directorate, Amilton Silva in the Commercial and Communication Directorate, Lia Coswig in the Biosafety Directorate, Lauren Ventura in the Social Directorate and José Antônio Ribas in the Institutional Relations Directorate.
Responsible for the Biosafety Directorate, Lia Coswig, veterinarian and Federal Agricultural Auditor, points out that IPVS 2022 will show the world the unique and responsible way in which Brazilian pig farming is developed. “The Biosafety Directorate was created to address the health concern of the event and protect our pig farming. At the same time that we protect one of the species, we preserve the entire Brazilian productive chain,” emphasizes Lia.
The Congress will also have panels on Health (with bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases), Use of Antimicrobials, Nutrition, Reproduction/Genetics, Wellness, Immunology and Vaccinology, Food Safety and Clinical Cases, among others.
“IPVS 2022 will be a unique opportunity for professionals in the production chain to join such an important event inside our own country. The gain in technical knowledge that the sector will acquire is immeasurable. We intend to be a milestone in the pig chain and contribute to transform pig farming after IPVS 2022. In the same way that occurred in 1988, we long to bring once again an experience that influences the breakthrough not only in Brazil, but in the world,” concludes Fernanda.
The IPVS 2022 has as its partners the companies Hipra, MSD, Boehringer Ingelheim, Zoetis and Farmabase; as supporters the companies Elanco and Ceva; as platinum sponsors: Ourofino, Trouw Nutrition, Agroceres PIC, Biofarma, IDEXX and Pharmacosmos; Gold: Phytobiotics, Magapor, Thermo Fisher, Crystal Spring and Tonisity; and Silver: Microvet, VetScience and BioChek.
