Australia - Changes for pigs destined for export

Published: November 30, 2006

The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) supports changes to the Export Slaughter Intervals (ESI) levels for veterinary treatments that have the active ingredients Dimetridazol, Olaquindox and Florfenicol. ESI’s are the number of days following treatment with veterinary compounds when pigs are not suitable for processing for export markets. For a number of veterinary compounds, export markets require either a longer period than the domestic withholding period (WHP) between last treatment and slaughter or nil residue in either the carcase or offal. ESI’s are set to ensure export product, in which these veterinary compounds are used, meet country of destination import protocols. The revised list of interim ESI’s for PigPass National Vendor Declaration (NVD) has been updated from the list first released in August this year. In this new list, ESI’s for Olaquindox and Dimetridazole have been designated a withholding period of 28 days each.
