Benny van Haandel, Hypor's Director of Research and Development spoke at Pig Focus Asia held in Bangkok, Thailand February 20-22, 2006. This conference is Asia's premier technical pig industry conference covering a wide range of topics from breeding and health through to nutrition and food safety. The conference is valued among Asian pig producers as the place to discover cutting-edge technologies from other parts of the world.
Benny was invited to speak on Gene Transfer and Genetic Improvement. The presentation was so well received by the participants that it was published in the April Edition of International Pig Topics, a well respected and leading industry magazine. Benny's presentation was based upon a paper of the same name written by himself and Dr. Patrick Charagu, Geneticist, Hypor Canada.
The paper discusses new reproduction techniques and their impact on future breeding processes. Benny and Patrick outlined techniques such as Embryo transfer and freezing, semen sexing and semen freezing. "We presented a view to the future when designer genetics may come into play" said Benny, "With designer genetics the customer will dictate the genetic make up of the embryos they purchase. They will dictate the combination of attributes such as back fat and loin depth; genetic markers that needs to be present and defects that cannot be present. At Hypor we are always looking to the future to ensure that we are using techniques that deliver value in the long term."
"This event was a key industry conference located in the heart of Asia, one of the fastest growing markets in the pig industry", said Marc Broadbent, Hypor Marketing, Strategy & Communications. "For Benny and Patrick to be invited to make a presentation at such a prestigious event is recognition of Hypor's growing significance as a global industry leader in swine genetics."
