Swine fever

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a large, double-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarviridae family. It is the causative agent of African swine fever (ASF). The virus causes a hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs; some isolates can cause death of animals as quickly as a week after infection. It persistently infects its natural hosts, warthogs, bushpigs, and soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros, which likely act as a vector, with no disease signs. It does not cause disease in humans. ASFV is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and exists in the wild through a cycle of infection between ticks and wild pigs, bushpigs, and warthogs. The disease was first described after European settlers brought pigs into areas endemic with ASFV, and as such, is an example of an emerging infectious disease. ASFV replicates in the cytoplasm of infected cells. It is the only virus with a double-stranded DNA genome known to be transmitted by arthropods.

The culling of an estimated 20 000 pigs in the Eastern Cape started in Idutywa on Monday, after an outbreak of swine fever hit the province. At least 3 500 emerging farmers' pigs have been affected by the virus, and strict control measures to stop the spread of the disease have been set in place. "We have started the process of culling about 12 000 pigs in the Eastern Cape rural town of Idutywa," said Eastern Cape senior veterinarian Lubabalo Mrwebi. The virus has spread to an area...

Since the 1960s there have been outbreaks of African swine fever in France, Italy, Malta, Belgium and Holland. The disease, which is endemic in most of Southern Africa, is highly contagious. The virus can persist in meat up to 15 weeks, processed hams up to six months and up to one month in contaminated pens. This week scientists at the Institute for Animal Health's Pirbright Laboratory will announce a complete genome sequence for the African swine fever virus, which will be used as a...

Authorities this week announced that an outbreak of swine fever in Papua province has since April killed at least 8,700 pigs, mostly in the southern coastal region of Mimika. Livestock health authorities have been shipping vaccines to the region in an effort to contain the virus. Swine fever, also known as hog cholera, is highly infectious among farm-raised pigs and wild boars, but is not dangerous to humans. Although pigs are not very popular in predominantly Muslim Indonesia, they...

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is amending its regulations by adding Chile to the list of regions considered free of classical swine fever (CSF). Chile also is added to a list of CSF-free regions that must meet certain certification requirements. This amendment will allow Chile to export live swine, swine semen, pork and pork products to the United States. The certification requirements for origin and handling are intended to ensure that exports of these commodities do not...
