Improved Farrowing Sanitation

Published: April 6, 2014
By: Paul Walker Thompson

I would like to start off by saying that I recommend that you read the article on Engormix.com by Ed Barrie called “ Farrowing Room Sanitation”. I would like to briefly point out a few things that really impressed me in this article:

(1) Ed Barrie suggested a cold water soaking for one day.
(2) Next, hot water washing melts fats and greases from fecal material.
(3) Use a foaming agent with your disinfectant to make it stick to surfaces.
(4) Have you veterinarian test for the bugs that you need to be killing during your Farrowing Room Sanitation.
(5) Allow for drying time, even up to four days!
(6) Wash and disinfect everything, even the cords to heat lamps, and heat mats, and remove front and back gates to get them totally clean. I hope these tips help you improve your herd health!
