Feed Mill Efficiency

Feed Mill Efficiency

Published: May 8, 2012
Summary
"You cannot improve what you do not control. You cannot control what you do not measure. You cannot measure what you do not define".  (anonymous) It is very difficult to know where to begin a discussion about feed mill efficiency. Perhaps a good place to start would be a definition of efficiency. The Encarta Dictionary: English (North America) defines efficiency as 1. Competence, the abi...

Dr. Koch,

It´s a wonderful presentation on feed milling efficiency. It is a fact that one has to take regular and systematic care and control from the time:

1.raw matreial arrives
2.unloaded
3.proper sampling done
4.physical and chemical examination of raw amterial done
5 .raw material stored as per plan in silo/or otherwise
6.entire procees control from intake--batching-grinding-coarseness-mixing-premixing-conditioning and pelleting and finally material reaches to farm level
7.formulation--specification-performance in short feed milling has main aspectes of managing materials, machine, men and money. After all, one has to produce consistancy every hr,every day ,every week and every month and every year.

Dear Dr Karim Jackson
The pelleting temp for dairy pellet depends on what size of die you use
10 mm die-------60-65 deg c
8 mm die---------70 deg c
6 mm die---------75-80 deg c
Maintain conditioning temp at optimum level before pelleting.

Dear Dr Koch,we are manufacturing horse feed use rice bran as main raw materials ,that our feed minimum must contained 15% of crude oil content. But from our research found raw rice bran contain 17% crude oil content. But after conditioning chamber ( 2 mins), extruder and dryer our feed loss more than 3 % crude oil content .Q1)-should I change the pedal conveyor to screw conveyor in conditioner chamber while all temperature in conditioning chamber and oven remain. Q2)There was a study that treat the rice bran using microwave heating 2450 Mhz for 2 minutes to stabilize rice bran premixed prior to extruding the feed prior to oven dryer will help to retain our horse feed crude oil content and reduce power consumption in conditioning chamber? Thank you FOO SIANG HOE

is there any formula for calculating efficiency of mill?

There no shortcut / formula for feed mill efficiency But certainly following points need to be followed 1 utilitise man hours judiciously without any waste of time 2 Do not allow machinery to run empty or over loaded 3 Note down electric meter reading every morning 4 clean alk magnets in the morning before batching 5 check oil and grease 6 time between intake and first batch coming out must be noted 7 weekly maintenance schedule must be followed 8 cv test of intermittent batches must be done 9 house keeping and bio security and hygiene of feed must followed Regards
