Due to rising oil prices and a greater awareness of the limited supply of fossil fuels, the latest reports in 2006 suggest that ethanol production is increasing rapidly – by as much as 16% and rising. In the United States, the White House aims to have ethanol “cost-competitive by 2012, offering the potential to displace up to 30% of the Nation's current fuel use.” This means that of the 250 million tons of corn that the U.S. produces annually, 140 million tons will be destined for ethanol production, leaving only 110 million tons for food and feed. The nature of the animal feed industry is changing rapidly, as an extra 47 million tons of DDGs will come into the marketplace annually over the next several years. Global animal health company Alltech will hold a meeting October 23-24 in Lexington, to discuss the future of the ethanol industry and the role of distillers dried grains (DDGs). With the goal of bringing together some of the industry’s key players to examine the current and future DDGs supply, Alltech’s Distiller’s Grains Meeting will focus on discussing existing technologies that enable greater use of DDGs in animal diets. Discussions will also allow feed industry professionals to generate ideas for integrating DDGs into everyday feeding. The meeting will cover such topics as the use of DDGs in animal nutrition, problems and opportunities in the industry, solid state fermentation, opportunities and limitations of DDGs, and the role of DDGs as a feed ingredient. Speakers will include: • Dr. Pearse Lyons, President and Founder, Alltech • Dr. Alex Yiannikouris, Research Scientist, Alltech, specializing in mycotoxins • Dr. Al Harrison, Coordinator of Field Research, Alltech, specializing in dairy • Dr. James Pierce, Monogastric Nutrition Researcher, Alltech • Mark Lyons, Director of Solid State Fermentation, Alltech Discussions will be facilitated by Dr. Karl Dawson, Alltech’s global research director.
