During refining of rice bran oil in the enzymatic degumming process, large quantities of rice bran lyso-phospholipids is produced as a byproduct. Rice bran phospholipids is a potent source of phospholipids and consists mainly of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and triglycerides. Lyso-phospholipids have emulsifying property and improve the digestibility of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. India ranks second for rice production in the world (157 million ton). Around 9 million ton of rice bran produced per year. According to the Solvent extraction association, India currently produces about 900,000 tons of rice bran oil, about 75% of the total global production of 1.2 million tons. India is the world’s largest rice bran oil producer followed by Japan, Thailand and China. Country's rice bran oil production is increasing by 50,000 tons yearly. 10-15 kg of rice bran lyso-phospholipids is produced as a byproduct per ton rice bran oil production. Large quantity of rice bran lyso-phospholipids is available now and in future also so more detail study of this non-conventional feed is necessary and we should add this in diet of ruminant as growth promoter as well as energy supplement.
