Dear Users,
This is an interesting forum from our Spanish community, generated by Gonzalo Carmona Solano a consulter in Bovine Reproduction from Costa Rica

How do fatty acids affect the fertility of cows??

I would like that based on the information outlined below we can start a debate on the effect of Fatty Acids on Reproduction. It will be an alarming extent?? Are we getting a clearer picture now?

Fatty acids, omega 3:

- Linolenic acid, epa-dha
- Fish oils - linseed

Roles of omega 3 fatty acids:

Inhibits the production of alpha 2 pgs
Favouring:
-Best conception rate
-Reduced embryo mortality
-Reduces the number of services per conception
- Favors Progesterone production

- To maintain the pregnancy is necessary to inhibit the secretion of pgs 2
The most critical period is between 8-17 days of gestation
As the source of bypass fat to be used must be conducive to inhibiting the production of pgs 2

- Flaxseed increases the diameter of corpora lutea and progesterone concentration (Petit et al., 2002). Important in the recognition of pregnancy and pregnancy rates.
A plus progestin better maternal recognition of pregnancy. Ac. Omega-3 Fatty increases the concentration of progesterone.
Pg increase secretion Series 3 (fish meal and flaxseed). Inhibits PGF 2 alpha (Burke et al., 1997 Petit et al., 2002).
Cyclooxygenase inhibition induces the synthesis of PGF2 alpha (EPA, DHA) reducing the conversion of ac. Arachidonic pg series 2. (Weber and sellmayer, 1990).

Conclusion:

- Is not advisable to provide omega fatty acids 3 to delivery and after delivery until the cow presents heat and is is inseminated

Fatty acids, omega 6:

- Linoleic acid
- Soy oil - maize - cotton

Functions of omega 6 fatty acids:

Increasing the production of pgs 2
Favouring:
-Involution of uterus
-Decreasing the retained placenta
-Advancing the onset of the first heat

- Prostaglandins of series 2 (omega 6) are very important at delivery and postpartum care

Series 2 prostaglandins are important for:
-Postpartum uterine involution
Diminished the retention of placenta
-Return to normal estrous cycle
-Reductions in days to first service

Conclusion:

- Is not advisable to provide omega fatty acids 6 after the cow has been inseminated

Aceite omega 6 omega 3
Cotton 50 0
Soybean 53 7
Fish 4 45
Corn 60 1
Palm 10 1
Linseed 14 58
Suet 8 1
