“Challenges of Assessing Choline Bioavailability”, Dr. Joe McFadden
The development and application of rumen-protected choline technologies ensures an adequate supply of choline to the dairy cow. However, our understanding of choline supply is limited by the methods used to measure bioavailability of this key nutrient. Because enhanced choline bioavailability can support health and milk production in the cow, this seminar will review challenges and insights into choline bioavailability in the dairy cow.

“Transition Cow Nutrition: Harnessing Long-Term Benefits from Short-Term Choline Supplementation”, Dr. Heather White
The transition to lactation period is a metabolically challenging period for dairy cows. Despite the challenges, there are also opportunities, especially with nutritional interventions that can improve both metabolic health and production. Supplementation of rumen protected choline has been demonstrated to improve milk production and milk fat Mechanistic research supports that the mechanism is through support of liver metabolism. Although often ignored, prepartum nutrient supplementation can also influence the calf during late stages of development. Data suggests that rumen protected choline supplementation prepartum supports growth and immune function of the calf after birth.
