Michael Czarick will speak at the Latin American Poultry Congress in Lima, Peru

Michael Czarick (Extension Engineer – University of Georgia, Department of Poultry Science) will be one of the speakers at the Latin American Poultry Congress that will take place in Lima, Peru, from October 9th to the 11th.

He is considered by the academic community as the principal authority in the design and operation of environmental control systems for poultry houses, and as the father of tunnel ventilation to keep the birds cool during periods of heat. Czarick has become a world leader in the industry movement to modernize the control of environmental housing.

There is much discussion that the poultry industry needs to modify production houses to meet the demands of a changing climate. On the surface, it seems very logical. Higher ambient temperatures would obviously require more of an emphasis would need to be placed on cooling systems. Higher air speeds, more evaporative cooling pads, higher levels of house insulation, etc. But, do our houses need to change in response to climate change or are their other factors, far greater than climate change, that will require poultry houses to evolve.

 

The design of a poultry house environmental control system is a fairly well designed science. There are basic scientific principles that must be kept in mind when determining the number and types of fans, pads, inlets, heaters, etc. that a poultry house should be equipped with. When the design parameters are not determined scientifically bird performance and health will not be optimized and operating costs will tend to be excessive.
