Australia - Lagoons to trap methane

Published: May 19, 2005

Pig Power will work on a fairly simple principle. At present, pig effluent at the Corowa piggeries runs through a series of open lagoons and settling ponds to an extensive irrigation system. Under Pig Power, five lagoons will be covered to trap methane gas, which is produced naturally. It will then be piped from the covered lagoons into three gas-fired generators near existing production buildings. The generators will also provide hot water to the abattoirs, reducing the reliance on LPG gas-fired boilers. QAF does not have access to the natural gas pipe line that serves Corowa township 9km away. Berrybank at Windermere, near Ballarat, has pioneered the generation of power from pig waste. Electricity is only one by-product, the other main one being fertiliser.
