I have recently supervised an MS.C. thesis on the effects of sodium butyrate on the performance of in Nile tilapia larvae. Fish performance and survival were improved with the addition of 2-3% sodium butyrate to the diets.

The results are very poor, and non acceptable by any means. All diets including the control diet resulted in extremely poor growth rates. When the fish grows from 0.2 g to only 2.0 g in 4 months, there must have been something wrong. Also, the feed conversion (FCR) is 7.0, How come???. FCR should range from about 1-2!!!
