Infection may retard nutrient absorption in the young chicks, thereby limiting the amount of Ca and P in their bones. Chicks are very sensitive to nutritional inadequacy and imbalance. This is the safest way forward. Natural and organic sources of antibiotics have more phytochemicals than already discovered. Synthetics will always have their limitations.
