[Dublin, IRELAND] - Global animal health company Alltech, is pleased to announce the opening of a state-of-the-art effluent treatment plant for its yeast facility in Serbia. Uniquely the treatment plant will incorporate a cogeneration unit which will produce heat and power for the facility. The green treatment plant which has the full support of the local municipality and the Serbian Government will be the first of its kind in the region to integrate both effluent treatment and power generation.
This treatment facility is a combination of both anaerobic and aerobic treatment plants, the new system will convert the biological waste into biogas which can then be used to generate electricity and contribute to the facilities gas and power requirements. This will result in the provision of 37% of its present requirements for natural gas and contribute to 34% of its electrical needs. In addition to gas and electrical supply, the hot water generated from the cogeneration plant will be utilised to heat various processes in the facility and to heat the anaerobic reactor, which is maintained at 37OC for optimum efficiency. In July 2009, incentives were announced by the Serbian Government to encourage investment in renewable sources of energy. This will result in a very favourable price for power generated from renewable resources in comparison to power generated from oil or gas.
Dr. Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech said, "One of the greatest challenges society faces today is our over reliance on diminishing natural resources. This facility will ensure that Alltech is pioneering the way forward in energy generation and conservation. It reflects Alltech's core values presented in the ACE principle - safe for the Animal, beneficial to the Consumer and its positive impact on the Environment."
