Dr. Lyndi Gilliam, Assistant Professor, Equine Internal Medicine, at Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, spoke at a recent Horse Owners Symposium held at OSU. The symposium offered equine healthcare information on several important topics.
Dr. Gilliam offers these tips to horse owners when they transport their horses a long distance-more than 500 miles:
• Before transporting a horse, have your veterinarian perform a complete physical exam on the horse, including a rebreathing examination.
• If a horse has recently been exposed to horses with viral respiratory disease or if the horse has recently had a respiratory infection, do not haul the horse long distances.
• Plan ahead and give your horse 8 hours to recover from a long trip before asking him/her to exercise or perform.
