Mexico is opening up its markets to American dairy cows.
Ag Secretary Mike Johanns said Wednesday that U.S. producers will be able to export animals under 24 months of age and registered with a purebred dairy breed association.
Shipments to Mexico can begin on Oct. 4.
In 2003, Mexico closed its market to American dairy heifers following the discovery of mad cow disease in Washington state.
Before the ban, the United States exported $103 million worth of dairy heifers to Mexico.
