Dairy Australia - We must give Doha Round another chance, say dairy leaders

Australian Dairy Industry Council Chairman Allan Burgess has expressed concern at the suspension of the Doha Round of Trade Negotiations. "It is extremely disappointing that members of the G6 could not reach agreement over the weekend to maintain momentum for a strong outcome from the Doha Round," Mr Burgess said. "The decision to suspend discussions is of great concern particularly in light of the agreement by the world leaders last week, during the G8 meeting, to continue to push for a comprehensive outcome to the negotiations." It is important that our government continues to work hard to resurrect the negotiations as soon as possible. As the Trade Minister, Mr Vaile, said before leaving for the weekend talks, "these things often require a near death experience," and it would appear this is what happened over the weekend. "The Australian dairy industry has worked long and hard with our government and the National Farmers' Federation to achieve a comprehensive agreement to improve the trading environment for agriculture in general and dairy in particular." "We must give the negotiations another chance to get back on the rails and not simply let this setback derail our efforts to achieve a fairer international trading environment for dairy farmers." "The dairy industry is willing to continue to work with our government to do whatever is necessary to achieve trade reform for agriculture," Mr Burgess said.
