The COLOSTROMETER™ is a practical field method for the rapid determination of colostrum quality prior to feeding the newborn calf. This simple field method permits the feeding of colostrum containing sufficient immunoglobulins (antibodies) to insure the successful transfer of immunity. The cost per measurement is virtually negligible as compared to the cost of calf replacement, and even worse, a lifetime of morbidity.
QUALITY CONTROL PROGRAM: A quality control can be instituted that starts with vaccinating dams, properly collecting, assessing & storing colostrum, and ends with feeding newborn calves the proper volume and quality of colostrum at optimal times. If high quality colostrum is pooled and stored, it can then be fed to newborn calves, in sufficient volumes, to again ensure the successful passage of immunity. In the event that there is excess volumes of high quality colostrum, the dairyman can dilute the pooled colostrum with milk to a level still considered superior in quality, and fed it to a greater number of newborn calves.
When pooling colostrum for feeding to newborn calves, under no circumstance should mastitis or abnormal milk be included in the pool. Colostrum that does not measure-up may be segregated and feed to older calves that have already been provided an initial dosage of high quality colostrum.
Timely Results: The single most important factor in calf management is the ingestion of an adequate amount of immunoglobulins (Ig) contained within the mothers colostrum, as soon as possible after birth. The longer the time from birth to ingestion, the less efficient will be the transfer of immunity, until a point in time is reached, at which time, no future antibodies will be absorbed.
One of the primary reasons the COLOSTROMETER™ has become such a valuable aid to the dairyman, is that it provides timely and accurate results, thereby allowing them to feed only high quality colostrum to newborn calves during the optimal absorption time frame.
Volume Versus Quantity: An adequate amount of Ig must be absorbed by the neonatal calf in order to ensure that the calf has received adequate protective levels. Two factors are responsible for determining the quantity of Ig available to the calf:
1. Concentration of Ig in the colostrum and,
2. Volume of colostrum available to the calf.
The COLOSTROMETER™ provides the user with the capacity to determine the quality of the colostrum by measuring the quantity of antibodies present. If the colostrum sample registers in the green zone, and the mother produces a minimum of 1-2 quarts (1-liter) per feeding, then the calf will be ensured of receiving sufficient immunity.
