The food poisoning bug listeria is rarely found above legal limits in smoked fish on sale in UK shops, according to a new survey published by the Food Standards Agency today. The study, which ran between July and November 2006, looked at the levels of listeria in ready-to-eat smoked fish in over 1,000 supermarkets, fishmongers and grocers across the UK. More than 3,000 samples were analysed to check for Listeria monocytogenes, the main type of listeria that causes illness in humans....

Marine aquaculture, farming in the ocean, focuses on environmentally friendly and sustainable methods to cultivate marine biomass for human consumption. With funding from USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES), a project team in Maine has measured the environmental impact of mussel rafts, an aquaculture method used to grow shellfish in coastal New England. Carter Newell and John Richardson used a combination of field data and an advanced numerical model...

The biggest current threat to marine life is not climate change but over fishing and mankind's demand for water, experts have warned. A study, drawing on the expertise of more than 100 top aquatic ecologists, looked at the world's water-based ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, tropical waters and Arctic seas. The state of the world's oceans has been of much concern recently, particularly the affect of increasing temperatures on marine life as global warming takes...

Fishing today isn't what it used to be, according to Yechiam Shapira, CEO of Israeli startup Subflex. There are fewer fish near the coasts, and more trawlers ply the high seas, making catching fish more difficult and challenging. In fact, fish - their taste and quality - aren't what they used to be, either, he says. The fish farms located in bays and inlets, where much of the fish sold today are raised, cause pollution and other environmental problems - and the fish they produce just...

Lake Diefenbaker is one of the most popular and cleanest lakes in southwestern Saskatchewan, but future plans for three additional fish farm pens along the lake are causing some concern about the environmental impact to the man-made lake. Wild West Steelhead is an Edmonton based aquaculture company that plans to expand its production on the lake. But some residents fear there may be an accident, such as a number of fish pens breaking and allowing thousands of mature fish to enter...

Nearly 40 percent of fish species in North American streams, rivers and lakes are now in jeopardy, according to the most detailed evaluation of the conservation status of freshwater fishes in the last 20 years. The 700 fishes now listed represent a staggering 92 percent increase over the 364 listed as "imperiled" in the previous 1989 study published by the American Fisheries Society. Researchers classified each of the 700 fishes listed as either vulnerable (230), threatened (190), or...

Putting brass where your money is could be a guarantee of safety according to researchers looking at the dangers of eating raw fish and shellfish in seafood restaurants, scientists heard at the Society for General Microbiology's Autumn meeting being held this week at Trinity College, Dublin. The Asian diet traditionally includes lots of raw fish and shellfish, and diners and restaurateurs are aware of the risks of food poisoning posed by contaminating bacteria. In Korea between 2003 and...

Researchers at NIFES have detected the parasite Kudoa thyrsites in 0.8 % of Atlantic mackerel from the northern North Sea. Enzymes released by the parasite gradually turn the fish flesh soft and jelly-like. Therefore, the condition is commonly known as "soft flesh". Most abundant in large mackerel Kudoa gives no visible symptoms in live mackerel, but 24-56 hours after catch, powerful enzymes released by the parasite gradually break...

Philip MacMullen, Seafish Head of Environmental Responsibility, said: “We broadly welcome the MCS “Fish to Eat and Fish to Avoid List”, since we realise that consumers need clear guidance to help them make responsible choices when buying seafood. Good, clear labelling will become a very important part of this process in the future but traceability is still far from perfect as far as consumers are concerned. In the meantime, it is genuinely difficult to be sure of all the details of...

After two years of preparation and negotiation, FAO Members * have adopted international guidelines aimed at limiting the impact of fishing on fragile deep sea fish species and habitats. The guidelines provide a framework that fishing nations should use when operating in high-seas areas outside of national jurisdictions, where many deep sea fisheries (DSF) are located. Stating that all fishing activity in deep sea areas should be “rigorously managed,” they lay out...

A team of scientists is studying the complex ocean upwelling process by mimicking nature – pumping cold, nutrient-rich water from deep within the Pacific Ocean and releasing it into surface waters near Hawaii that lack the nitrogen and phosphorous necessary to support high biological production. The researchers are harnessing the power of the ocean to conduct their experiments, using the up-and-down motion of waves to pump deep water to the surface. Their next step is to create a pump...

Researchers have found that spring-time growth of sea ice algae is critical to krill growth and reproductive potential. The annual formation and retreat of sea ice around Antarctica is one of the largest physical changes on Earth. Besides its substantial impact on both regional and global climate, the ice cover plays a pivotal role in the biogeochemical cycles of the Southern Ocean and is an important structural element of Antarctic marine ecosystems. Forming a centimetre- to metre-thick...

Perfluorinated compounds (FPC) are man-made pollutants present in the environment. NIFES has developed a method to analyse perfluorinated compounds. The results show that the level of these substances is very low in seafood. Perfluorinated compounds are very stable, making their degradation in nature a slow process. As a consequence, the PFC concentration will have a tendency to magnify up the food chain. Analyses carried out by the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research...

You've heard of stud cattle and stud sheep, but how about stud black tiger prawns? In a world first, CSIRO scientists have breed black tiger prawns in captivity, allowing them to develop a program for farmers which will selectively target the largest and tastiest prawns. Production is expected to double as a result, and Dr Nigel Preston says they'll trial the program on a number of Queensland prawn farms. "(We'll be) looking at the phenotype, that's what you...

Øyvind Haugland studied inflammatory reactions in salmon for his doctorate, and in particular how the ingredients of newer feed sources influence these reactions. An increased understanding of the cell types of the fish immune system, and how they communicate with each other, is important for the development of better vaccines for salmon farming, and to shed light on the ways that new feed types may influence fish health. The aim of the doctorate was to study how one of the key mediators...

“This was not a trivial task,”   says Dr. Stephen Watts, professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), who teamed up for five months with Dr. Addison Lawrence, director of the Texas A&M Shrimp Mariculture Facility to determine the composition of diets necessary for the proper growth of juvenile, sub-adult, and adult sea urchins. “Our primary concern was the same concern that everyone has for cultured species: nutrition. What do we...

Small scale fisheries produce as much annual catch for human consumption and use less than one-eighth the fuel as their industrial counterparts, but they are dealt a double-whammy by well-intentioned eco-labelling initiatives and ill-conceived fuel subsidies, according to a University of British Columbia study. Small-scale fisheries are characterized as fishers operating in boats 15 metres or shorter. “They are our best hope at sustainable fisheries,”  ...

Is it worth using collective marks such as "Organic"  and "Best of Norwegian"  on food? This question has been raised by Scientist Hans Martin Norberg, Nofima Market. In his Doctoral dissertation "The Influence of Collective Marks on Consumer Evaluation of Food Products",   Norberg has discussed the usefulness to consumers of this type of food labelling. He has proposed a model to explain how to understand the usefulness to consumers of collective marks....
