Opportunities in the Indian MarketsDAIRY:

* Growth in captive fishery production is tremendous
* For the improvement of Haryana Fisheries some projects from Japan have already been received.
* Captive fishery production has increased from 600-800 kg/ha/yr in 1960 to more than 2000 kg./ha/yr in 2002
* The marine fish catch was 2.81 MT in 2004.
* National Fishery Development Board is helping 429 fish farmers´ societies.
* Average annual yield is 2.2 t/ha. Over 19,000 million fry per year are produced.
* 402 freezing units have daily processing capacity 8,500 tones
* 485 frozen storages have capacity of 109,090 tones.
* The marine products are exported to over 64 countries.
SHEEP & GOAT:
* The sheep and goat meat has no religious taboos.
* The estimated consumption of meat in our country is 2.55 million tons.
* Total meat production is 4.26 million MT of which:
- Sheep and Goat contribute 0.72 million MT.
- India has 40 descript sheep and 20 goat breeds.
- Meat is considered organic as animals are reared in community grazing lands.
PIGGERY:* Piggery is picking up in urban areas through retail chains selling packaged brands like Ham, Bacon, Sausage, Salami, etc.
* Due to an increase in non-veggies population, pig meat is becoming more popular.
* Till 1997 pig meat consumption was 6% of total meat consumption in India.
* Pig population is increasing from 7.0 millions in 1975 to 16.0 millions in 2000.
* There is increase in meat production too:
1980---262 (thousand MT)
1990---417 (thousand MT)
2000---476 (thousand MT)
2002---487 (thousand MT)
* Back yard pig rearing has become a conventional profession in villages and slum areas providing additional income.
PROCESSING & PACKAGING:
a) DAIRY PRODUCTS PROCESSING
* Out of total milk production only 15% is processed into various products like butter, ghee, milk powder, cheese, paneer, condensed milk, Indian sweets etc.
* Due to inadequate processing India wastes roughly $ 13 billion worth of farm products including dairy items annually.
* With retail chains opening in a big way there is increasing demands for various milk products.
* Lots of scope are there to form industrial zones like SEZs with very many chilling plants, boilers, milk powder machines, packaging machines, other machines to manufacture value added products like, Chocolates, Toffees, Ice Creams, Khoa, Kheers, Cheese, Paneer, versatile Indian sweets, etc.
* There is lucrative export potential of Indian milk products.
* USDA forecast export of milk powder during 2007-08 as 60,000 tones and butter 1,000 tones.
b) MEAT PROCESSING
* India has largest livestock population with 50 % of buffalo population and 18 % of cattle in the world.
* There are 171 Meat Processing Units producing 4.5 million tones of meat annually.
* The slaughtered rate in relation to animal population are:
Cattle---6%, Buffalo---10%, Pigs---99%, Sheep---30% & Goat---40%
* The meat consumption pattern:
Fish---51%, Bovine---29%, Mutton & Goat---8%, Pig---6%, Poultry---6%
* During last decade 8 million broilers were produced and the trend favored poultry and the share was doubled to 12%.
* Export of poultry meat was to the tune of 20,000 MT during 2001-2002.
EQUINE:
* Despite this era of mechanization and automation the need for the equine industry is badly felt.
* Roughly 0.22 % of total livestock constitute this equine species in India.
* Horses and ponies are useful as pack animals and also for carting.
* Mules and donkeys are mostly pack animals.
* The National Centre for Research on Equines is located at Hissar, Haryana for promoting this sector to serve multifarious purposes in India.
* Remount Veterinary Corps of Indian Army have stud farms for breeding horses and mules
* There is lot of investments in rearing racehorses and polo ponies.
* In our country there is much scope and opportunities in this industry.
CANINE:* Pet dogs are getting popular with the urbanites.
* All pet lovers do agree that pets offer social support and all its related benefits.
* Canine pets are part of modern fashion and are also useful in many ways.
* Indian Army has a dog strength of 12,000 specialized canine breeds.
* The genuine dog breeders are doing roaring business by selling pups at premium price.
* The ancillary business in dog food, vitamins, pharmaceuticals, additives in food, soaps, shampoos etc. along with herbal combinations are fledgling industries.
