About the XX Latin American Poultry Congress
It is expected the presence of 2.000 visitors representing all Latin American countries and other poultry and egg country producers.

More than 70 important technicians and International researches will present, with the aid of lectures and posters, the latest technologies and information on animal welfare, genetics, nutrition, handling, slaughter, industrialization and commercialization of chicken, turkey and other fowls, as well as eggs and their by-products.

A wide range of cultural and touristic activities will be offered to the congressmen accompanying persons for them to better enjoy the beauties and traditions of Rio Grande do Sul state.

The venue is the Fiergs Exposition Center, located in Assis Brasil Ave. 8787, where the congress and the commercial exposition will take place on September 25 to 28, 2007.

Brazilian Poultry Overview

The year of 2005 will be marked as a period of great production evolution in terms of Brazilian Poultry with special attention to its exportations. Important avian advances were registered regarding the development of sanitary programs and monitoring to guarantee the quality and sanity of Brazilian product.

During this period, Brazil produced 9.3 million tons of chicken meat, 350 thousand tons of turkey meat and 24,6 billions of eggs, besides meats and other products from other species.

The exportations gained an even bigger impulse with the purchase of chicken meat to 142 countries reaching a exchange revenue of 3.5 billion dollars, 35% more than the previous year in terms of value and 15% more in terms of volume guaranteeing to the country the status of the world biggest poultry exporter.

The notable exportation increasing in the last few years did not affect the domestic market - it is still the biggest chicken meat consumer. Last year, Brazil registered an increase of 4.69%, representing a consumption of 35.4Kgs per person.

For the year of 2006, all the International market changes leading to the possibility of a decreasing in poultry meat consumption in important destinations of our products, indicate that - besides our huge structure and industry are prepared to development - in the first half year we will probably face a stable scenario and maybe even a reversion both in terms of production volume and exportations. It will be necessary to work hard on domestic market, avoiding high prices to try to compensate any possible loss of the external market.

For the second half year it is estimated a positive reaction regarding global consumption and consequently a growth of this sector - which could use all its nowadays capacity generating more jobs and bigger earnings within the rural areas. Obviously, the increasing of poultry production would result also in a bigger consumption of maize and soybean, for example.


Brazilian Poultry Numbers

• In the year of 2005 - Production of 9.3 million tons of chicken meat, 350 thousand of turkey meat and 24.6 billions of eggs;
• It is responsible for 1.25 million of direct jobs and more than 4 millions job positions, both direct and indirect;
• The status of the world biggest poultry exporter, with an exported volume of 2.85 million tons of chicken meat in 2005 representing an exchange revenue of 3.5 billion dollars;
• The Brazilian Poultry represents 55% of all Latin America chicken production.


Pre-Congress Activity: Workshop on rendering

September 25 – Tuesday

The Board of ALA decided to organize during the 20th Latin American Poultry Congress, to be held in September 2007, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, a workshop dedicated to the analysis of problems caused by residues generated in different parts of the production chain and the environmental impact generated by poultry production activities.

This emergent problem is becoming increasingly critical in the region. Hence, a strategic approach to the analysis will be used, and problems generated in different countries and available management alternatives will be discussed in the workshop.

The workshop will include a presentation, after which 3 work groups will be establish to discuss specific problems and to generate a document that will be exposed in the plenary session of the workshop, that will be part of a conclusion document, that will be presented on Thursday, September 27, during the Congress.

The three groups will discuss aspects relative to broiler, nest, and layer litter, dead birds, and other farm residues, rendering (downgrades, fat, effluents, offal, skin, head, feet, feathers, bones, meat, etc.), hatchery residues, technology residues (packages of medication, pest control chemicals, sanitizers and disinfectants, as well as syringes, pieces of equipment, in addition to the environmental impact of poultry production activities.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on September 25, 2007, as a pre-congress activity of the 20th Latin American Poultry Congress (Porto Alegre, Brazil) at Centro de Eventos of FIERGS, and the access will free. The success of the workshop depends on the presence of experts from different countries, making meaningful contributions to the solutions found or locally available.
