SIAL Montreal presents its 4th edition in March 2007, an event that should not be missed!


BACKGROUND

In 1964, Paris hosted an event that, over the years, would become the largest food exhibition in the world: SIAL, the International Food, Beverage, Wine and Spirits Exhibition. Canada and Québec participated actively in this first edition, the latter reserving a stand to promote its products, including fresh meats, cured meats, confectionery, maple products, regional products, etc.

Few then knew that 35 years later, two association representatives from Montreal undertake to persuade the heads of the SIAL family to establish an edition of the exhibition in North America, not just anywhere at all but in Montreal – the very heart of North American gastronomy!

With over 4,992 restaurants and 80 different cultures and cuisines, Montreal is the true centre of gastronomy and multiculturalism in North America. Selling Montreal as the host of a new SIAL was simply a wonderful business opportunity.

Alain Bellefeuille, then General Manager of the Super Salon de l´alimentation international, owned by the Québec Food Retailers´ Association (ADA), and Paul-Arthur Huot, General Manager of the Québec Agri-Food Export Club, today Québec Agri-Food Export Group, were entrusted with the mandate to develop a proposal aiming at selling the idea to Exposium, joint owner with SOPEXA of all SIAL exhibitions throughout the world.

Convinced of the benefits of building on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and determined to attain their objective that a North American version of the SIAL be held, they presented their idea for the first time in November 1998.

MONTREAL IS SELECTED!

Following the meeting, the Exposium directors and their partners concluded that it was in fact an interesting market for the SIAL family to explore – and launched negotiations that would come to an end in June 1999 with the creation of SIAL Montréal.

SIAL Montréal presented its first edition with great pride in March 2001, and the success of the event proved right all those who expended their efforts and believed in this adventure.

Given its mission to provide the various players in the food sector with the opportunity to meet in a business context likely to foster commercial exchanges, SIAL Montréal offers North Amercian producers an access to international markets, and international producers an access to the food products, wines, beverages, and spirits of the North American market.

The Olive d''Or at SIAL Montréal 2007

The First international olive oil awards « Olive d´Or » will be presented to the 2007 edition of SIAL Montréal and will be supervised by the « International Olive Oil Council » from Madrid.

« Olive d´Or » is open to all extra virgin olive oils with less than 0.8% of oleic acid. There are nine awards, three « Goutte d´Or », three « Goutte d''Argent » and three « Goutte de Bronze », for each of the following categories: Light fruit flavour, medium fruit flavour and strong fruit flavour. Each participant may register in one or many categories.

CANADIAN AGRIFOOD EXPORT GALA

Two of Canada´s leading agrifood organizations unite to invite you to a prestigious event.

Agri-Food Export Group Quebec-Canada and SIAL Montreal - North American Food Marketplace, have formed a new alliance.

The management teams from both the Export Group and SIAL Montreal are proud to announce the inaugural Canadian Agrifood Export Gala. It will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2007 during SIAL Montreal, which runs from March 28 to 30, 2007.
