Iowa Swine Day will be held on June 27, 2013 in the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus. Located next to Hilton Coliseum, there is plenty of free parking around the building and it is easily accessible from Highway 30 via the University Blvd exit in Ames.
Excitement is building for the 2013 version of Iowa Swine Day. The program this year was developed to address topics of greatest interest to pork producers and people who work closely with the industry. For example, the morning plenary session addresses 4 key topics: Employee engagement and productivity (Probst-Miller), Impact of disease on diet utilization and pig growth (Gabler), the Animal activist agenda (Berman) and Global success in swine production (Pedersen).
After lunch, there will be 3 concurrent sessions. One will continue on the competitiveness theme, another will dig deeper into the personnel theme and the third will provide examples of new research results at Iowa State University.
For example, Dr. Charles Stark will discuss new technologies in feed processing, Bjarne Pedersen, an international consultant in pork production from Denmark, will share his experiences with group housing of sows (housing and management) in larger production systems and Len Steiner will share his perspectives on the future of pork in the consumer marketplace. Jay Christensen from Murphy-Brown will discuss production data to drive output metric improvement and Sarah Probst Miller will talk about ways to improve employee retention through effective on-boarding. There will also be a panel discussion on personnel topics chaired by Darra Johnson of Murphy-Brown with panelists Troy van Hauen (The Maschhoffs), Chuck Groom (Hanor) and Rodger Main (Iowa State). There will also be presentations on swine influenza virus, PRRS and circovirus.
In short, the program covers everything from nutrition to pig management, disease to personnel management and housing to broad industry issues. In total, there will be 18 presentations for attendees to choose from. Organizers hope this will mean that there will be something for everyone on this industry focused program. The concurrent sessions means that attendees can select the topics they find most valuable and relevant to their farm and to their job.
Sponsorship support has been excellent, so the registration fee for this event is only $60 until June 14th; then, the registration fee will increase to $80. Students may register for only $25.
