Indian poultry market is world's 2nd largest market growing @ 12-15%. Total poultry industry is valued at about 350 billion. The per capita consumption of chicken is approximate 2.4 kg which is much lower than the national institute of nutrition's recommendation (11Kg). The organised sector of poultry industry is contributing nearly 70% of the total output and the rest 30% in the unorganised sector. India produce 61 million tones of egg which is 3.6 % of the global egg production. Out of total consumption of egg in India, 75% of egg is consumed by the 25% population living in urban and semi urban areas. 800 hatcheries are operating in the country and it is increasing rapidly.

India's big potential to increase consumption of meat & meat products in domestic and International markets. Despite of all this, there is lack of advanced technology, inadequate cold storage facilities and processing equipment, particularly at the farm level, act as a major constraint in enabling this sector to take a quantum jump in production and productivity. Milk production in India has come a long way over the years from a low volume of 17 MT in 1951 to around 115 MT in 2010; 70% of milk is produced by marginal farmers having 1-4 farmers. Despite India being the largest milk producing nation in the world the Indian Dairy Industry is weighed down by a host of problems like low milk productivity of milch animal i.e. 987kg/year (world average is 2200kg/year) , large no. of unproductive animals, low genetic potency, poor nutrition etc.

Each day, we consume 9000 trucks of fruits, 14,000 trucks of vegetables, 4000 trucks of potatoes,8000 trucks of onions and 1.3 million chickens.Unfortunately, despite being the largest milk producer and 2nd largest producer of fruits and vegetables, India has a very limited integrated cold-chain infrastructure, with only 5386 standalone cold storages having a total capacity of 23.6 million tonnes; 80% of which is used only for potatoes.About 35-40% of fruits and vegetables and nearly 10% of food grains in India are wasted annually. As much as 20-40% of food grown in India spoils before reaching consumers. This translates to be over approx Rs 1 trillion per annum.
