EndoBan is a new innovative feed additive that combines different strategies to reduce the level and toxicity of endotoxins before they can reach the blood circulation of the animal. This results in a lower potential for endotoxemia and the subsequent effects on animal performance.
Endotoxins are toxic molecules produced by many bacteria. The most well-known endotoxin is free bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria (Fig. 1). LPS molecules are released into the environment during bacterial growth, cell death or lysis. Therefore, endotoxins are present everywhere: in air, water, feed, soil and the gastrointestinal tract of animals. Chemically, LPS are composed of an O-polysaccharide, R-polysaccharide and lipid A part. The exact structure of the LPS molecules varies from one bacterium to another, which leads to different levels of toxicity.
In production animals, the gastro-intestinal tract is the main risk site where endotoxins can be translocated from the lumen into the blood circulation. In a healthy animal, a limited quantity of endotoxins penetrates the digestive epithelial barrier. However, several external factors are known to affect the barrier properties of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in an increased permeability and translocation of endotoxins into the blood. Examples of risk factors for endotoxemia are heat stress, the consumption of feed contaminated with toxic substances (e.g. DON), changes in feed composition and the presence of pathogens in the gut.
Once in the blood, endotoxins will elicit an inflammatory immune response and trigger a range of metabolic disorders. Generally, excessive immune reactions consume a lot of energy and nutrients which come at the expense of the production of meat, milk and eggs. In the worst case, high amounts of endotoxins can result in septic shock and even death. It is apparent that measures should be taken to effectively remove or detoxify endotoxins before they can reach the blood circulation.
