ABSTRACT Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is a condition in which fast growing broiler chicks die suddenly with no apparent causes. It has developed in to a major problem for broiler industry in many parts of the world. Broiler chicken of all ages are affected starting as early as 2 days of age and continues up to marketable age. Peak mortality usually occurs between 3 rd and 4 th week of age wit...
I once challenged with SDS in 2003.The bore hole water which was some how salty was the big reason. When i changed to non salty water ,adjusted lysine and methionine level the problem dissapeared. It was a great achieve since before i lost great number of broiler parents.

Thanks to all for appreciating the effort.
Further, I´'d like to add a few more points here:
1. All fast growing commercial strains and breeds are susceptible.
2. Flip over (SDS) and water belly (Ascites) are both metabolic diseases having common etiology and both share symptoms like edema and cardiac involvement. when condition is acute it causes Sudden Death Syndrome in Broilers and chronic condition results in Ascites.
3. In SDS Uuse of Potassium bicarbonate @ 0.62 g/bird in water helps to reduce mortality. Moreover, light programme s'd be adjusted such that curtailment in feeding time occurs until the glycogen function of the liver gets recovered.
I agree with Mr Jaydip. Reducing the protein and energy in the feed will hamper the growth rate; even reducing the daylength will do the same. So these two ideas are impractical in case of broiler.
I have found in Assam the areas where iron content is hegher in water the SDS rate is also higher compared to the low iron areas. So i feel the salt content also may be the reason for SDS. Of course Biotin works well along with herbal immunomodulator like Imurich (Samsun Biotec), Geriforte (Himalaya).
WE need to start also looking at incubator temperatures especially in the last 3 days of incubation before transfer as these create serious issues with organ development heart and lung as well. The modern birds just produces too much heat in multistage machines!
The SDS is quite high in kashmir also. surely light restriction programmes and feed restriction plays pivotal role in the management of flip-over syndrome
Altitude is also something to consider in SDS as the thin supply of oxygen in high altitudes places more demand on the heart to supply oxygen to tissues in fast growing bird. Dietary levels of Vitamin E and C and also Selenium should be of concern in SDS.
