Effect of Dietary Sodium Diformate on Performance and Litter Quality in Broiler till 42 days Post-hatch

Published: September 13, 2012
Summary
INTRODUCTION Animal husbandry suffers from losses due to contamination with pathogenic bacteria. Their resultant impacts in animals include lower weight gains and increased mortality. Banning the use of in-feed antibiotics (AGPs) in livestock, as has happened in the EU, placed more pressure on animal producers and feed millers. In this context, organic acids have long been used to counteract ...

Thank you for highlighting the improved performance in using sodium diformate in feed of broilers. Does 0.1 or 0.3 % sodium diformate change the pH of feed? if yes, could it interfere with the vaccines (IBD & NDV) during vaccination? Kindly comment on this.

Dear Dr. Hettiarachchi,
thank you for your comment. Sodium diformate is not an acidifier of the feed. it is only active once inside the bird. The product remains inactive in the feed, as long it is dry. The power of sodium diformate starts when the product is split into formic acid and sodium formate: and this happens inside the GI-tract of the bird, due to the gstric juices as well as the water which the bird drinks. We have measure the pH-effect in the feed. And this is only very limited. Even higher doages of the chemical compound in the feed led only to a reduction of the pH by 0.1-0.3 units (depending on the feed, the dosage). So there is no danger of interference with vaccines in the feed.

Thank you Dr. Christian for clearing the point. Now, the application in the field should come through the feed millers. What is the cost that involves in incorporating 0.3% of sodium diformate in the broiler feed?

That depends on the local/regional supplier. Since we are working in India/Sri Lanka through our colleague Dr. A. Desphande, please get in touch with him, since he is involved in the pricing: anant.deshpande@addcon.com
