1. IntroductionThe small intestine is a highly differentiated and complex organ with many nutritional, physiological, and immunological functions [1–8]. First, the small intestine is responsible for the terminal digestion and absorption of dietary nutrients and is, therefore, essential to health, growth, development, reproduction, and sustaining life in organisms. Second, the neonatal small ...

IntroductionThe domestic dog (Canis familiaris) and the domestic cat (Felis catus) have been human companions for at least 12,000 and 9000years, respectively [1, 2]. These animals contribute to the mental health and well-being of children, adolescents, and adults, and have become increasingly popular in many countries and worldwide over the past decades (Table  1). For example, the numbers of ...

Thanks for sharing this interesting article. We should stop calling these amino acids "nonessential". They are truly functional amino acids in animal nutrition. For example, in chickens, glutamate and aspartate are major metabolic fuels for enterocytes of the small intestine. In addition, glutamine stimulates protein synthesis and inhibits protein breakdown in chicken skeletal muscle. We now know ...

Energy is not matter but is contained in matter. Metabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose provides energy in animals in a cell- and tissue-specific manner. So, we need to understand adequately animal biochemistry, particularly the efficiency of metabolic transformations of energy in poultry and livestock species. Please read my recent interview with Engormix on this topic.

Let's have discussions about this interesting topic on amino acids, feedstuff quality, and diet formulation for animals, including poultry and swine. Livestock, poultry, and fish have dynamic requirements for dietary nutrients. Therefore, adequate knowledge about principles of animal nutrition is essential for improving the growth and production performance, feed efficiency, as well as the health ...

Q: Can you tell us how you arrived at the proposed optimal ratios and amounts of true digestible AAs in diets that you have developed in your research?A: Results of studies by my group have established the concept that animals have dietary requirements for not only so-called “nutritionally essential” amino acids (EAAs) but also so-called “nutritionally nonessential” amino a ...

IntroductionPigs suffer high rates of embryonic mortality, especially during the peri-implantation period of pregnancy [1, 2] when embryos elongate rapidly, signal for pregnancy recognition, and attach to the uterine wall [3, 4]. Maternal nutrition plays an important role in the development and subsequent survival of conceptuses (embryo/fetus and its extra-embryonic membranes), especially the ...

Guoyao Wu likes the comment:
I should like also to comment from Dr. Marchenkov regarding "vegetable methionine". As Dr. Wu correctly states, methionine is methionine; an amino acid with a clearly defined structure INDEPENDENT of the source. I have seen numerous products claiming to be "Herbal methionine" and these materials are not methionine, and do not contribute methionine. When used in correctly balanced and formulated di ...
