India is soon to introduce a law requiring livestock producers to strictly follow a withdrawal period in antibiotic use in feed in an attempt to make meat, milk and eggs free from antibiotic residue. Amit Sachdev, India Representative of the US Grains Council told Asian Agribusiness Media that the law will take effect within the next few months. The Ministry of Health proposed the law in response to concerns over antibiotic resistance. He said the law would force feed producers in India to find alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters and livestock producers. At the same time, livestock producers, especially small-scale farmers will have to follow the withdrawal period of drugs used in feed as prescribed by veterinarians.
yes, its very essential to have a law and its enforcement as quick as possible.
Antibiotic resistance mainly starts with improper usage and continuous (prolonged)usage at lower dosage.
If gets materialized, would be a welcome beginning. Control measures for preventing indiscriminate use would call for a huge effort, multiple regulations, educating people and also the para-vets, restriction on purchase of such milk and eggs as well as punishments besides certification label on products. Sale also needs to be controlled. Antibiotic resistance has a very big economic impact too.
In a country like ours where sale of explosives and their starters could not be controlled, this appears difficult. However, the thought itself is revolutionary and must be supported by everyone. We are a democracy with out discipline and need stronger measures till the awareness is spread.

There was demand since long to control the indiscriminate use of antibiotics because of residues in the food as well as resistance. At the same time we have not to forget to educate the farmers for adopting best animal husbandry practices otherwise there will be great economic loss to them for discarding their products till withdrawal.
It is high time to introduce such controls over the industry. It is my opinion that regulations of such kind should be extented to agricultural products as in case of milk and meat.
It is infact high time to introduce such control.I have been formulating broiler feeds for more than a decade have not used any antibiotic,instead used prebiotic and probiotic and found broiler performance quite satisfactory.This is a welcome issue.
If the law is enforced,it is welcome.Poultry processing becoming a future trend,food saftey will be a key issue.However looking into the current problems,how effctively antibiotic growth promoters and treatment antibiotics can be removed?Are we prepared for that?How effective our biosecurity measures?How effectively it can be implimented in scattered market? it is huge and multiple task to enforce it.As the efficacy of production comes down,farmers should get assured price for the produce.However it may open up export and retail apportunities.In conclusion we need to adapt to global trends for the survival
it is a welcome step on part of gov. to prohibit the use of antibiotics in livestock feeds. day after day people are getting resistance to drugs if through food antibiotics are entering into body.
Its a good thing to stop the usage of antibiotics but at the same time we need to think about alternative .if the government banned suddenly it will effect to farmers.
The regulatory dept should create the awareness and stop the antibiotics usage one by one at particular intervals.
Good move by GOI. It is highly to impose such law and it should be followed in letter and sprit rather put it paper only. Also the use of such drugs in agriculture produce should also be regulated. Moreover law should took into oxytocin use in lettingdown of milk by milk man should be enforced strictly.
