Selenium in the composition of selenomethionine is not directly used in the body, since only selenocysteine is part of the active proteins associated with selenium.
Any consumed selenium compound (organic or inorganic) is metabolized to selenium hydride, that is, an inorganic compound. Only this compound is involved in the synthesis of selenocysteine and further in the formation of active proteins containing selenium.
Selenomenionine normally forms in plants and may erroneously be included in the protein composition in animals, but such proteins are not biologically active.
In some cases, hydroxyselenomethionine may also have a positive effect on productivity, but the mechanism of this process is not known. In this regard, it is impossible to manage to get a guaranteed effect.
