Canada - New Guide Helps Maximize Benefits of Vaccines

The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization in Saskatoon has released a new guide designed to help swine producers maximize the benefits of vaccines. Vaccination Guidelines for Swine was developed by the VIDO Swine Technical Group, with funding provided by pork producer associations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. The package was modeled after a similar guide developed by the VIDO Beef Technical Group for beef producers and it contains much of the same background information. VIDO Vaccine Development Program Manager Dr. Phil Willson says the guidelines for swine contain additional information specific to hogs, which he is confident will be of use to virtually all pork producers. "We have this subtitled as 'how to get the maximum benefit when vaccinating your swine herd.' The objective here is to make sure that producers and people who are vaccinating swine know all of the appropriate procedures for storage, handling of vaccine, how to administer the vaccine, some principles on how vaccines can work and some of the best guidelines on how to administer the vaccine. The type of information that is available in this include principles for vaccination, storage, issues related to can you or should you combine vaccines, ways to get the vaccine prepared and ready to use, some vaccines require mixing, the techniques and the location for injecting swine and things afterwards. What do you have to do to dispose of the material, how do you clean your syringes, are there any risks to people? Things like that are all addressed in this information". 'Vaccination Guidelines for Swine' is available through the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization web site at www.vido.org.
