Brazil bans the use of growth-promoting antibiotics

Published: February 22, 2019

The measure aims to improve the quality of animal feed and decrease infections caused by consumption of contaminated food
The SDA (Department of Agricultural Defense), which is under the MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply, Brazil), publicized in December the ban on the use of antibiotics that promote animal growth. “The use of the microbes tylosin, lincomycin, virginiamycin, bacitracin and tiamulin as performance-boosting additives in food-producing animals will be banned,” stated the instruction, which appears in Ordinance no. 171.
According to the MAPA, the ban on this substance in animal feed is based on the recommendations of international bodies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), due to its possible influence on human health. According to data from the Organization in 2018, based only in the Americas, about 77 million people per year become sick after consuming contaminated food. Of these, 9 thousand die, including 2 thousand children. In Brazil, from 2007 to June 2016, 90.5% of cases of diseases transmitted through food were caused by bacteria, with the most commonly found serotype being Salmonella spp. (7.5%), followed by Escherichia coli (7.2%) and Staphylococcus aureus (5.8%).
In consideration thereof, the market is adapting itself to control pathogenic bacteria and to contribute to the healthy growth of animals. Such is the case of ICC Brazil, a Brazilian company specialized in yeast-based additives which, valuing the quality of life of animals as well as the quality of meat that will be consumed, possesses a range of products that substitute growth promoters and act in a natural way in the organism of broilers and pigs, one such product being ImmunoWall®.
ImmunoWall® is a natural solution that aids in the reduction of contamination and the prevention of problems caused by pathogens. Based on this principle, ImmunoWall® stands out among other products by being comprised of a dense cellular yeast wall, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and for having high concentration levels of β-glucans and MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides). The resulting additive is a guaranteed solution with the best cost/benefit ratio.
MOS is capable of agglutinating pathogenic bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, impeding the colonization and proliferation of such populations in the intestine. β-glucans act by stimulating the production and activity of macrophages, which are defense cells that play an important role in the immune system and can phagocytize and destroy microorganisms.
As such, a diet supplemented with ImmunoWall® ensures that animals maintain the equilibrium in their intestinal microbiota and that their immune system responses are improved, resulting in a decrease in contamination and the transmission of pathogenic bacteria to other organs in the body.
