LEVUCELL® SC Authorized in Canada for Horses

Lallemand Animal Nutrition is pleased to announce that its live yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 is now registered by the Canadian’s Food Inspection Agency for use in horse feed, “to improve feed digestibility”. The registration is for both LEVUCELL®SC20 and LEVUCELL®SC 10ME (the micro-encapsulated form used in pelleted feeds).  The approval for the use of LEVUCELL®SC in horses in Canada follows the authorization by the European Commission in 2009 for the use of the product in horses as “digestibility enhancer”. The newest authorization is equally supported by robust scientific data outlining the effectiveness and safety of the live yeast strain CNCM I-1077.
Some modern horse breeding practices have been shown to impact horse digestive functions and the rich microbiota, whose disturbance could unbalance the horses’ nutritional status, and progressively lead to health and performance issues. Several trials indicate that the live yeast strain CNCM I-1077 represents a safe and natural solution - optimizing the nutrients in forages and/or digesting feed to improve its utilization. CNCM I-1077 also has been demonstrated to enhance the digestive processes in horses, resulting in visibly positive benefits of improved weight gain and or performance in ponies during their growth phase (1).
In summary significant improvement in fiber and overall dry matter digestibility (2) while using Levucell SC in horses diets have been demonstrated; leading to what scientists attribute to beneficial effects on horses’ hindgut micro-flora (3), including sustained stimulation of the activities of cellulolytic bacterial populations (responsible for continued fiber digestibility). Le Treut and Sacy (2011) observed effects of improved fibre digestibility by evaluating the fecal matter of race horses (4).
LEVUCELL® SC complements Lallemand’s existing range of nutritional solutions for horses, which include ALKOSEL (a selenium enriched yeast with its readily available source of selenium, and associated nutritional benefits) also registered in Canada.  Other products include AGRIMOS and FERMAID EASE which when fed help maintaining the optimal nutritional status and high performance of horses (these are not registered in Canada at present).
