Published: May 10, 2010

The Mega International Animal Industry Expo (IAI Expo, 2010) will be held from 27-29 October, 2010 at NDRI Karnal, Haryana. This is the first time that IAI Expo is going to be organized at Karnal, Haryana instead of busy commercial centre of New Delhi, at Pragati Maidan. Delhi is heart of India and likewise Karnal is the heart of Haryana.
The running economy of India mainly lingers around Agriculture and its allied sectors like Animal Husbandry, Poultry, Fishery, Dairy and the Dare Devils who are engaged in this industry are always the brazen sufferers of flaws, drawbacks and all types of lapses creeping out of indifference, laxity and carelessness of the Authority.
Agriculture contributes over 25 percent of India's GDP out of which Indian livestock sector provides 20 per cent of the Agriculture GDP. India has the largest livestock population in the world. Buffalo population constitutes 57 per cent of the world's population, but cattle comprise 16 per cent that of the world. India ranks first in respect of cattle and buffalo population, third in sheep and second in goat population.
The rural economy is mainly agriculture and animal husbandry centric. Dairy is the main attraction for the rural poor people and millions of the small holder dairy farmers in the villages have achieved the miracle of India's first position in milk production in the world. Not only that India has the 3rd position in egg production, 5th place in broiler meat production and second position in shrimp production.
The IAI Expo is not the first of its kind, but it has a trail of its successes in previous mega trade shows, which were global trade centric expositions on dairy and livestock industries. The ensuing IAI Expo 2010 is being planned in such a way that it would become the best show at the heart of the town. It has the aim to bridge the gap between science technology and the commercial application for the benefit of the Dairy, Livestock and Fishery industry to create an impulse for the opportunities lying in our country.
Why IAI Expo is required
With a view to combating the recent global economic recession and boosting up the demand market worldwide the Show is a potpourri of measures required to bring life to the global slowdown of businesses.
On the contrary, this will open up an immense opportunity for the companies, manufacturers, suppliers, traders, importers and exporters of livestock, poultry and aqua products to expose, communicate and prescient their business as well as products to the public and other eminent visitors present during the international exposition of related trades and businesses.
The vital role played by an Expo is known to all. It not only highlights the bright side of the industry but also exposes the darker and weaker aspects of the industry so that we can have scope to redress the problems in different sectors of the industry.
Need for Dairy Industry Expo
India has achieved the arduous task of becoming the largest milk producer in the world. This achievement must be attributed in great measure to "Operation Flood" and the historic Cooperative movement. Still the industry has failed to build on this bedrock and reach the paradigms set by the world milk majors.
Albeit India has the highest cattle population which is 57 per cent of world's buffalo population and 16 per cent of world cattle population, it has the lowest milk yield per animal. Much attention is drawn to this aspect of dairy industry so that the scientists and the industry big wigs of the industry meet together on a common platform and discuss about this problems. In this respect the IAI Expo 2010 may come to these solutions.
  •  Annual growth rate of this sector is 5 per cent.
  •  Organized sector accounts for only 15 per cent.
  •  Basic strength is millions of village milk production units
  •  Requires genetic improvement of non-descript animals to boost production through scientific breeding, feeding and management.
In addition to that we require the following things to be improved such as:-
      1. Development of milk production in India
      2. Regional shares of Indian milk production
      3. Improvement of daily milk yield
      4. Development of numbers of dairy animals
      5. Development of milk prices
      6. Development of processing and marketing channels for value added dairy products
      7. Farm structures in the rural areas.
Need for Dairy Products Industry Expo
With a view to expanding the dairy products business and foraying into the export market with new channels this type of trade exhibition is very essential. The value added dairy products may be assigned as a separate industry, which is booming provided the products are manufactured following strictly the HACCP rules and fulfilling the Codex Standards.
Need for Poultry Industry Expo
Indian Poultry Industry is the Rising Sun of India with robust growth rate. It is in the focus for its rapid growth rate - Broiler sector 12 - 15 % per annum while the Egg Sector shows 8 - 10 % growth annually.
  • v Being world's 3rd in egg production and 5th in chicken meat production rapid integration is going on to capture the whole Indian Diaspora.
  • v As chicken eggs exporting country India stands 8th with a share of 4.7 % of the world export market (2004)
  • v India exported 48582 tons of eggs in 2004.
  • v India has also forayed into the countries of Middle East for exporting chicken products and shell eggs.
  • v An international Meet like IAIE will strengthen the industry status and bring complete solutions to the future hurdles and unprecedented calamities.
Egg Sector
Unlike developed world the eggs are not an item of daily use in India. Indians have not adapted to egg consumption. There is still debate on about if eggs are vegetarian or non-vegetarian food items.

The Growth Drivers are:
  • a. Low Cost of Production
  • b. High Productivity
  • c. Consumption Trends
The Growth Inhibitors are:
  • a. Market Forces- Volatile markets inhibit producers from increasing production by expanding operations.
  • b. Distribution- Distribution networks are the key to success
  • c. Egg Export Potential- Albeit the Indian Egg Processing Sector is quite competitive, but the high import duty by the importing countries and EU's requirement for a pesticide residue monitoring plan are the impediments for its growth.
India's Sheep and Goat Industry Need Momentum For growth
India has a goat population share of 25% in livestock population and India ranks second in goat production. Though India ranks 5th in the world with a sheep population of 120 million, sheep and goat rearing has remained by and large a traditional occupation. Organized farms are conspicuous by their absence.
Despite this, the traditional occupation has survived as a result of the poor reach in the distribution of poultry and eggs. The rising price of goat meat is another major inhibitor which makes this an item of consumption for the elite.
NEED for the Aqua Industry to be exposed through this IAI Expo 2010 :
The fastest growing method of food production in the world is aquaculture. The Asia Pacific is the home to 90 percent of world's aquaculture production. It is becoming more and more developed because of increasing stringent standards on food safety of the major food importers such as US, EU and Japan. So the visitors in the Expo would like to see more aquaculture, its present scenario in India and future opportunities for improvement further to focus it globally.
India has a traditional base in aquaculture. Presently of the 1.2 million ha of potential brackish water land available for brackish water aquaculture in the country, only about 14.47% has been developed for shrimp culture. At present the area under culture for both shrimp and scampi is 173 380 ha with a production of 164 390 tones during 04-05. In India there are 351 hatcheries with a production of about 14 billion seeds per annum. Almost the entire quantity of feed utilized in the hatchery is imported. Therefore manufacture of hatchery feed is also a promising area. MPEDA has ambitious target of achieving US $ 3 billion through sea food export during next five years.
