Disinfection of bedding material in poultry

Forum: Disinfection of bedding material

Published: August 12, 2011
By: Munawar Ali

In all kind of Poultry, if the birds are kept on floor, bedding material is used. It includes wood shaving, wheat straw and rice hulls etc etc.... In some countries like USA sterilized bedding material is available but most of the countries it is not available. In Pakistan mostly rice hulls are used as bedding material in poultry houses and it is severe threat for poultry if it is not disinfected properly. When new flock is placed a very big quantity of rice hulls are used as new litter. Please suggest how we can disinfect it properly when it is used in bulk quantity ?

What about reusing the litter after slaughter ? Do you think that roasting the litter could be a good idea to disinfect it and reuse it.

Dear sir Good day! I am Raja from Zagro Singapore. Allow me to introduce our company Zagro manufactures and distributes a wide range of nutrition and protection products. Starting as a division under the prestigious Swiss-based Zuellig Group in 1953, Zagro is listed to the public of the Singapore Stock Exchange in 1996. We are awarded ISO-22000 certified Quality Management System (by UKAS), inclusive of HACCP Certification and in conformance to GMP requirement for all production facilities. In addition, we are awarded FAMI-QS certification. Our products conform to stringent quality control procedures thereby enabling us to deliver only the best to our customers. We like to introduce our biological litter treatment products for your consideration effectively control litter harmful microbes and ammonia and other toxic gases Ammonia is a noxious gas that is produced by microbial decomposition of nitrogenous waste in the litter. Build up of ammonia within the farm premise affects the health of the animals, as well as humans that are exposed to it. For animals, it may reduce animals’ performance such as lower weight gain and increased mortality rate as the animals become more susceptible to various diseases especially those related to respiratory and vision problems. LitterPro is a blend of beneficial microorganisms which acts mainly to reduce gram negative micro flora responsible in the formation of enzyme that converts uric acid to urea, which, in turn is converted to ammonia. This product also contains microorganisms that control ammonium transformation into harmful compounds and decompose litter material which can be used as organic fertilizer. LitterPro is the biological litter treatment product which is contain probiotics microbes to alter the litter micro flora while improving litter quality and providing marginal reductions of ammonia and decompose the Litter in naturally special features in LitterPro? ? Litterpro microbes will produce the antimicrobial protein active against gram negative bacteria which is responsible for the break down of uric acid into ammonia. ? Litterpro microbes utilize uric acid as a substrate for their growth thus inhibiting the reduction of uric acid to ammonia. ? Litterpro microbes produce proteolytic enzyme which will break down the protein excretion products (from the birds) and improves the litter quality by reducing the water holding capacity of the litter. ? Litterpro microbes produce the organic acid from starch fermentation which reduce the litter pH and thereby decrease the pathogenic and urilytic bacteria in the litter. ? Litterpro microbes oxidizing ammonia to Nitrite to Nitrate Indications - Reduce ammonia level and other toxic gases within a farm premise. - Reduce pH of the litter which in turn helps in controlling gram negative microorganisms and cake formation. - Improve farm hygiene and litter quality. - Helps in protecting the environment by preventing accumulation of harmful compounds in soils and ground water. - Improve overall animal health status and performance. The products which have been mentioned above are : ENCIFORM - RM; STALOSAN F and FORMALIN. Formalin has been banned in EU and in many other countries. It was a very good product but it is dangerous for human health. It is difficult to obtain a good quality bedding from the suppliers. For instance, there is a shortage of wood and dry wood shavings are not available. Many farmers have to take moist wood shavings and then dry them. This is an additional cost on energy. The risk of ASPERGILLUS is common during the brooding and farmers suffer high mortalities. Grateful if the Canadian Company can send me the list of products for disinfection. My email is : imamode.lfl@food-allied.com Thank you

We agree with the writer that formalin is not a product of choice since it is carcinogenic. It needs to be studied if fumigation with formalin can enter litter and prove efficacious. Usually litter is infected and has high moisture content. It may be infected with E.coli, Salmonella etc. and has a alkaline pH which aids in their development. A product Liiteron+ is found to be highly efficacious. It acidifies the litter, controls ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and is effective litter drier and works as a sanitizer. It is safe to use while alum in hazardous.

The use of PLT- Litter Treatment is a great product to consider to lowering the pH safely to levels that provide an environment that is hostile to most challenging bacteria. It is environmentally friendly and is widely used as the product of choice for ammonia control. It can be used at anytime during the growout process on any poultry. It has been used, proved and tested for over 20 years. Find out more information at www.joneshamiltonag.com.

Lemmox (Stabilished Chlorine Dioxcide) is being proven for its instant instant ability to kill E.Coli and Salmonella, contact time seconds to minutes. Lemmox can be fumigated on Litter for a better result. It is also used for floor sanitation and spraying on the birds, Practice followed is thrice a week and giving fantastic result in Broiler farms. Lemmox Mode of Action: Lemmox is a powerful oxidizing agent - an electron receiver. This means that the Lemmox molecule is in constant search for an additional electron. Disinfection: The destruction of pathogenic and other kinds of microorganisms by physical or chemical means. Lemmox acts by first destroying the cell membrane, then the nucleus of the bacteria by chemical oxidation not chlorination. As the organisms are totally destroyed no resistant strains can develop which enables Lemmox to be used on a continuous basis without the need for alternative biocides. When a bacterial cell comes into contact with Lemmox it donates an electron from its cell wall, thereby creating a breach in the cell wall through which cell contents pass in an attempt to bring the concentrations on either side of the cell membrane to equilibrium. The cell dies through lysis.

Aoa I am dr m usman haider from Pakistan. I use a disinfectant at farm(breeders.layers.briloers) in presence of birds is G-cide Stable Glutaraldehyde sterilizing and disinfecting solution at Neutral pH.no activator. Rapid acting.non corrosive. Non staining. Non irritant. Non inflammable. Non rusting. Non volatile. Non carcinogenic .long shelf life.sporocidal.Virucidal.Fungicidal. Bactericidal. Glutaraldehyde+Surfactant+Buffering solution=G-cide. It easily comply with the impending European norm of 0.05 ppm threshold level.so this is a friendly product for labourer also friendly to use. Mode of action. The addition of the surfactant allows the Glutaraldehyde to penetrate structures more quickly. 2.The addition of the buffering solution means the PH of the product can be controlled. This leads to stable and safe product.3. Surfactant are known for their cleaning and wetting power.under certain conditions; they make glutaral more skin friendly and less volatile holding onto the glutaral in a complex formation.4.By forming a complex the glutaral molecule is tamed. 5. The nitrogen in protein' in the pathogen act like a magnet for gultaral and the surfactant gives up its loose hold. 6. The released gultaral react with the nitrogen of the pathogen and interferes with the germ food chain. The pathogen literally Starves to death. Active Ingredient. MICROSYN HD1(1;5pentanedial and Glutaral (C5H8O2) 9.8%. This product from UK. For further contact with dr m usman cell no.03224444916.

@ Abdelhadi Bqoor (Jordan): Roasting litter does not ensure complete disinfection of the litter. After using Liiteron+ you can reuse and reuse and reuse..... your litter one flock after another. Just remove caking, if any. However, if there is any disease outbreak in your farm we advise you not to reuse the litter. Liiteron+ keeps the litter dry, checks ammonia problem, Destroys E.coli, Salmonella, coccidia, kills fly larve and maintains farm hygiene.

in our areas which is the highly mosturized northern areas of iran ... due to the mosture first we spread the beddings ( which is wood shaving most of the time ) in the saloon then we use formalin 20 percent in water ( the amount of water used per each meter is around 150mm ) and then heat the saloon up to 32 degrees in centigrade and after the 12 hours passed of this process evaquating the saloon off formalin by turning the ventilation systems on ... this is the process implemented in our saloon and most of the time we are not encounting with any kind of pathoges during the rearing course

I think , while considering the disinfection and reusing of litter ,we must keep in mind that disinfection cost must not exceed price of new litter. also method must be economical n easy with less costly equipment involving. Even if disinfection is done properly, then how to remove high moisture? So economical n easy disinfection as well as removing moisture are tough tasks to achieve than arranging new litter (rice hsuk in pak).

The best way to reuse old litter for a new flock is to compost it for a period of 5 to 6 days. To do so the old litter should be heaped in the middle of the room making a cone. After about 24 hours the temperature of the heap will be increased to about 60 degree centigrade because increase activity of the anaerobic bacteria present in the litter. The heap should be broken after 48 hours and to be heaped again. After about 24 to 36 hours of heaping the heap needs to be broken and can be used successfully to raise another flock over it. Dr Kula, this is a gr8 idea of drying down the litter and at te temperature of 60 degree + bacteria will also dye. For the technique you have given, products are availabe which will take the temperature to 80 degree + and the waiting period can also be reduced to half.
