A very attractive ingredient for piglet feed, both on a qualitative and a competitive point of view, especially when taking in account the high level of sucrose (82 ), the low levels of moisture and potassium, the palatability and the free flowing aspect.
In Melose® the potassium content and the lower nitrogen compounds have been reduced to a minimum and Melose® can be used with up to 20 % in feed mixtures for piglets.
Such high inclusion of sucrose in a pre-starter for piglets has so far not been common since the opinion among nutritionists tended to avoid sucrose because of the lack of the enzymes sucrase and fruktokinase at small piglets. The fear of creating digestive disturbances by use of high amounts of sucrose has lead to a recommendation to avoid sucrose in feed mixtures for piglets. American scientists have investigated this theory and they concluded that there is no scientific proof to assume that sucrose feed to 14 days old piglets will create any form of digestive disturbance. Even very small piglets are able to build both enzymes very fast and will fully utilise even high amounts of sucrose before they are 3 weeks old. Trials show that Lactose, sucrose, and molasses in simple and complex diets for nursery pigs effectively replace lactose, supporting comparable performance.
Melose® for sows during farrowing and lactation
An extra dose of easy digestible energy for farrowing sows is often needed. 100 gram Melose® per sow daily from 2 days before farrowing and until 3 days after farrowing will supply the sows with the additional strength to carry out a quick farrowing. Melose® can be used as top dressing or as additive in the feed.
In feed for lactating sows liquid molasses is a normal ingredient. Practical experiences have shown that a too high inclusion of liquid molasses may cause a scouring in the piglets, resulting in poor growth and high mortality among the suckling piglets. The potassium and lower nitrogen compounds in the molasses most likely cause this. In Melose® these are only present in very small amount and Meloseâ is an excellent energy supplement for lactating sows and resulting in a higher feed intake, higher milk yield and low weight loss during lactation. The use of 5 % of Melose® in feed for lactating sows will increase the weaning weight of the piglets and give a better reproduction in the sows.
Melose® for cattle
In feed for calves and other types of feed for ruminants Melose® is an interesting ingredient, especially in mixtures where the high content of potassium and water in liquid molasses appears to be a problem (müsli mixtures).
Melose® enhances stability of ”müsli-mixtures” for horses
The production of rolled feed mixtures for horses includes the use of liquid molasses to avoid separation. The high water content of molasses leads to optimum conditions for mould growth and the feed will have a short durability often only a few weeks.
A partly replacement of the liquid molasses with Melose® will reduce the total water content in the feed and the feed can be kept in a good conditions for quite longer. There will be no change in taste and the feed will still have its normal appearance.
Melose® - stable and free flowing – easy to handle
Melose® is a free flowing powder, delivered in big bags of 1,200 kg or in 25 kg bags. Special storage capacity like tanks or silos are unnecessary. The sugar content is 82 % sucrose.
Sucrose, in the opposite of lactose, is a non-reducing sugar. The risk of a Maillard reaction between sugar and lysine, which decrease digestibility of lysine, is not higher than by the use of liquid molasses. There is nevertheless a small theoretically risk that a hydrolysis of sucrose, splitting sucrose to glucose and fructose, can occur in the pellet press or in the expander. Both these sugar types are reducing sugars and could lead to an increased risk for Maillard reaction. But the risk for a Maillard reaction is much higher when using dextrose or lactose since both are reducing sugars and don’t need a hydrolyse to lead to a Maillard reaction. It is therefore important to keep the holding time at high temperature as short as possible to keep the risk for a Maillard reaction at a minimum. On the other hand this problem is the same as for a large number of other ingredients which are sensitive to high temperature.
Summary: Melose® can be used as a feed ingredient or as a top dressing, because
- It is a free flowing powder
- It has a strong natural sweetness
- It is extreme easy digestible
- It reduce the water content in the feed
- It can be used in piglet feed with up to 20 %
- It is an effective energy supplement for farrowing sows
- It is an effective energy supplement for lactating sows
- It has all the advantages of molasses and none of the disadvantages
- It reduces the risk for Maillard reaction compared to the use of dextrose or lactose in pelletised feed
