Professional Title:
Researcher on Fish Reproduction and Genetics
Description of professional services:
My area of expertise is mostly on freshwater fish, and currently working on the genetics of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, with a broad aim of setting up a selective breeding programme that employs modern biotechnology tools. I set-up intensive and semi-intensive catfish farms, formulate diet for table for and broodstock. I am highly skilled in management and commercial production of catfish. i conduct and write-up comprehensive feasibility study for tropical, land based aquaculture projects. Other species are Heterobranchus longifilis, Heterobranchus bidorsalis, Oreochromis niloticus, Gymnarchus niloticus, Heterotis niloticus and Carp.
Professional experience:
I graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Fisheries from the Federal University of Technology Yola in 2008 (as the all round best student) and won the Prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship twice; for an MSc. in Sustainable Aquaculture and a PhD in Fish Reproduction and Genetics in 2010 and 2013 respectively. These awards are among the numerous academic awards won during my academic life.

As a professional, i started practicing aquaculture since 2006 (before graduating from the Uni.) by raising farmed and wild catfish stocks on my farm in Nigeria, from where i got my broodstock of Heterobranchus bidorsalis and Heterobranchus longifilis (both wild) and Clarias gariepinus (farmed). Since 2007, i have successfully bred catfish on a commercial scale in Nigeria, set up so many farms for different clients ranging from large catfish farms in earthen ponds, concrete tanks, mini recirculating systems, large commercial hatcheries etc. to handling reservoir projects for integrated aquaculture and polyculture involving different species of catfish, Tilapia, Carp, Gymnarchus niloticus and Heterotis niloticus,

I have worked on the genetics of African catfish in Uganda and surveyed hatchery practices and broodstock management there. Developed different feeds for different fish species and different farms in Nigeria and during my research on catfish in Uganda.

In 2012/early 2013 (before starting my PhD), i started work on feed processing, looking at how machine design affect feed quality i.e. water stability and floatation.

Just to say i have versed experience in land-based freshwater aquaculture.
