Re: Article - Feeding for Maximum Milk Production and Reproductive Performance
This is a good overview of reproductive performance of dairy cows as effected by nutritional status. We have found toxic effects of excess intake of protein in peri-urban dairy buffaloes in the northwest frontier province of Pakistan. The farmers feed thier animals at a same scale irrespective of productivity. The high yeilding buffaloes utliize the protein available in the fodders and concentrate feeds but the low yielders can not utilize the excess intake of protein. The excess intake of crude protein, associated with higher serum urea levels and low energy intake, led to poor body condition. These were found as the key factors for low reproductive efficiency and may be corrected by adopting a proper feeding strategy.
