Somatic cell count (SCC) is the total number of cells per milliliter in milk. Primarily, SCC is composed of leukocytes, or white blood cells, that are produced by the cow´s immune system to fight an inflammation in the mammary gland, or mastitis. Since leukocytes in the udder increase as the inflammation worsens, SCC provides an indication of the degree of mastitis in an individual cow or in the herd if bulk tank milk is monitored. ...

INTRODUCTION Early detection of mastitis is considered to be the best method to allow the cows the best chance for prompt recovery. Most farms base mastitis detection on visualization of clinical signs such as swollen quarters or altered milk. However, on large farms that have hired workers for milking it may prove challenging to have good mastitis detection. Therefore, new technologies are being constantly tested to automatically detect mastitis in the milking...

INTRODUCTION Milk conductivity has been evaluated for mastitis detection in the past without a clear picture of how it works. The information shown in this descriptive study shows the normal variation that occurs throughout the lactation in dairy cows.      MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from different farms was used for this study. All farms had milk meters equipped with conductivity probes (Afimilk, Israel). Cows were automatically...

This spring I have noticed a lot rougher teat ends than usual. This observation has probably been caused in part by our recent long winter. Generally, teat condition is worse in harsh winter weather and chapping of teats tends to make teat-end condition worse as well. A teat end in good condition is important for resisting mastitis. The teat canal is the cow's last line of defense and the primary physical barrier preventing invasion of mastitis pathogens into the udder. Repeated milking of cows...

Mastitis is a multifactorial and costliest disease of all milk producing ruminants. Lack of scientific health care and managemental practices has been repeatedly high lightened for cause of mastitis. Early detection and a holistic approach is a bare need of days to combat mastitis in milch animals. The maintenance of hygienic environment, udder health and enhancement of udder immunity has been recommended for control of mastitis. The herbal medicine can be successfully employed for...

Heat stress is considered one of the main causes of performance and economic losses in the world dairy sector. These losses are proportional to the degree of heat stress cows are subjected to (days or hours per year, cows are exposed to THI above threshold), as well as to the level of production and some nutritional and managerial practices. Do we really know to quantify the total losses? The answer for the moment is no! The literature published until now deals with most of the...

Mastitis poses the highest economic impact on dairy farms from all diseases. This is due to losses in unrealized milk production, treatment costs, increased risk of culling, and discarded milk production. Fresh dairy cows are at highest risk of getting mastitis with the highest...

Dear Users, This is an interesting forum from our Spanish community, generated by Enrique Astorga from Canada: As a dairy farmer if you should take a hit of over 80 of mastitis treating the problem without resorting to antibiotics, is to leave your old practices using antibiotics or try to see other alternatives? What would you say if you have 90 success in treatment? Many dairy farmers in North America are in the search for alternative treatments without...

Somatic cell count (SCC) is related to the total number of cells per millilitre of milk. Primarily, SCC is composed of leukocytes that are produced by the cow’s immune system during an inflammatory process in the mammary gland, commonly referred to as mastitis (Looper, 2012). This inflammation results from the introduction and multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms in the mammary gland, and a complex series of events leading to reduced synthetic activity, compositional changes and...

Would the dairy cow industry be open to a transdermal patch that will have the ability to deliver antibiotics to the udder especially for mastitis? The patch would be a slow release patch placed on the udder that would deliver antibiotics over a 5-7 day period directly to the compromised compartment. The patch would be able to withstand the harsh environment, extreme temperature and the possibility of a cow trying to lick the patch off. The patch would be non- toxic to human and animal and...
