New SeoFoss slurry additive increases nitrogen binding and reduces odour

  • SeoFoss exhibits excellent results in terms of homogeneity, odour and ammonia-binding
  • The market’s finest particle size enables ideal slurry processing in both cattle and pig herds

Vitfoss is launching SeoFoss – a brand-new slurry additive showing exceptional results in test herds. SeoFoss uses ion exchange to bind ammonia in the slurry, thus reducing ammonia vapours. This creates a buffer in the slurry, thereby minimising the leaching of nitrogen.

“We have great expectations of our new slurry additive, SeoFoss, which has produced excellent results in test herds with both pigs and cattle. There are excellent results for homogeneity, odour and ammonia-binding,” according to Jesper Jacobsen, Product Consultant for Vitfoss.

Large particle surface binds ammonia in the slurry
SeoFoss has the finest particle size on the market and, compared to other products, a larger particle surface increases the rate of ion exchange. At the same time, it improves the homogenisation effect.

“The high ion-exchange effect limits odour from the slurry and in so doing reduces the amount of ammonia vapour. This makes slurry processing easier and safer,” Jesper Jacobsen says.
This is confirmed by Lizette Pilegaard, manager for Claus Clausen in Vojens.

“The slurry is more homogeneous and easier to manage and it has improved our indoor climate. We are now using SeoFoss wherever we know there are problems, and we will keep on doing this,” she says.
SeoFoss has also been included in SEGES’ nationwide trials where SEGES is studying the product’s nitrogen-binding properties and seeing whether it can increase crop yields per hectare.

About the SeoFoss slurry additive from Vitfoss and DLG:

• Safe and easy slurry processing
• More homogeneous mass
• Binds nitrogen
• Reduces odour
• Easy to use
• Floating layer on slurry tanks
• Eases workflows
• SeoFoss is dosed in the amount of 20 g per m3 of slurry. A 10 kg bucket is enough for 500 m3.

SeoFoss eases workloads

Lizette Pilegaard, 'manager for Claus Clausen of Vojens, states:

“We use SeoFoss because it eases our slurry-processing workload. The slurry is more homogeneous and easier to manage and it has improved our indoor climate. We are now using SeoFoss wherever we know there are problems, and we will keep on doing this.

In recent years we have given the slurry a little ‘push’ by flushing each slurry channel with a pressure washer. The slurry was so thick that it couldn’t move by itself. This is partly due to the straw we use in the farrowing unit, which caused the slurry to dry out and become more compact.

So we tried using SeoFoss. We quickly saw that the product started working, and half of the old, dry slurry was gone three weeks later. It used to take all morning to get rid of the slurry, but now the only time we spend is on opening the plugs. This also means that the slurry easier to manage because we don’t have to bother using pressure washers.

We tried out SeoFoss in the climate-controlled unit, mainly to focus on increasing the slurry’s nitrogen content. The nitrogen content rose by 300 grams of nitrogen per m3 in the climate-controlled unit and by 1 kg per m3 in the farrowing unit. We’re tempted to use it throughout the barn, if we need to focus on raising the nitrogen level.

Once the pigs are in the barn, we dilute SeoFoss by mixing it with water in a water jug. This makes it easy for us to pour it into the channel without getting the pens’ slats wet. If the pens are empty, we scatter some SeoFoss on the slats before washing them in places where we know the slurry is a bit thicker.”
