The heart

Published: October 15, 2015

The Old English word heorte is related to the Latin cor and the Greek kardia. All three derive from the Proto Indo-European root kerd-. In the Old English, “heart” had already acquired multiple meanings: breast, soul, spirit, mind and intellect (now preserved in the phrase to learn “by heart”). And now the heart is on my hand.
