Aquaculture Europe 2009. Trondheim, Norway. August 14-17-2009 Organised by the European Aquaculture Society in cooperation with the Nor-Fishing Foundation.

Research has underpinned the significant development of aquaculture over the last three decades and Europe has been a leader. European research has focused primarily on the validation of new species production; breeding, nutrition and health management. As aquaculture continues to develop, research will undergo fundamental change. Current technologies have potentially reached their limits and we now need re-thinking.

Aquaculture Europe 2009 will address this challenge and will provide an international forum to discuss latest research initiatives and new research frontiers. Aquaculture Europe 2009 will take place just before the world''s leading aquaculture exhibition, Aqua Nor, where many new research approaches are already starting to find industrial applications.

AE2009 Thematic Sessions

The thematic sessions take place each morning of AE2009 and are plenary sessions. International speakers will
present these thematic sessions, that „open the debate‟ and pave the way for the parallel, technical sessions of
contributed presentations in both oral and poster format.

• Blue biotechnology - where next? This opening plenary presentation will look at the current status of "blue
biotech" (especially since our Aquaculture Europe 2004 conference in Barcelona) and present new potential
applications in aquaculture.
• Nanotechnology and its applications in aquaculture "hardware" will address the use and application of
nanotechnology on the surface and structure of aquaculture nets, cages, tanks and other equipment to maximise
utilisation efficiency and welfare and to minimise biofouling and other impacts.
• The role of microbiota in the aquatic environment and in fish, providing an overview of the general status and
examples of latest research into host-microbial interactions, gut health, environmental interactions and seafood
safety applications.
• New molecular biology applications and their importance in fish breeding, traceability, monitoring of shellfish
toxins...and others.
• The Strategic Research Agenda of the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform, providing
the latest updates on the production of a Strategic Research Agenda based on the Vision Document that has been
prepared by this industry-driven European technology platform.
